Did you know that one conversation could change someone’s life?

Today, Sep. 12th, is an important day for suicide prevention. It is R U OK? Day.

R U OK? is an Australian non-profit suicide prevention organisation with a vision for a world where we're all connected and protected from suicide.

It’s a big vision.

Really BIG.

And big things begin with tiny steps.

Like starting a conversation:

  • In the workplace or

  • At school or

  • In your community.

How to help:

1. Ask “R U OK?:

If they don’t want to talk, that’s okay, don’t criticise them. You could say: “Please call me if you ever want to chat”

2. Listen without judgement:

Take what they say seriously and don’t interrupt or rush the conversation

3. Encourage action:

You could ask: “How would you like me to support you?" - Some conversations are too big for family and friends to take on alone. If someone’s been really low for more than 2 weeks - or is at risk - please contact a professional as soon as you can.

4. Check in:

Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If they're really struggling, follow up with them sooner. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference.
